Stopping the seepage

Our position: Others should follow Winter Garden's lead on building standards.

November 15, 2004

What's in a paint job?

Plenty, if you ask the estimated 2,000 owners of new homes who blame poor paint jobs and a lack of sealant for the buckets of water that seeped into their homes during this year's overactive hurricane season.

While others are busy "studying the problem," the small west Orange County city of Winter Garden actually did something in response to the complaints.

Commissioners unanimously agreed last week to require builders in the high-growth city to use the proper sealant and paint to prevent water intrusion in new homes. As retired home builder and Winter Garden Mayor Jack Quesinberry said, it should have been done anyway.

Good for Winter Garden. Others should follow the city's bold lead and do right by the home buyers.
