Builders group to release its report on leaks

The Florida Home Builders Association will release today an engineer's report on what it thinks caused thousands of new houses to leak during the three hurricanes that swept through Central Florida last summer. A source familiar with the investigation said water seeped into new homes through walls, windows, doors, soffits and roof vents. The source said the report will point to the state building code -- rewritten in 2001 -- which required that new homes have better ventilation and wind resistance; the resulting roof vents and wind-resistant windows often leaked during the storms. Older homes generally performed better, the source said, because they were built under different construction codes. The report will be released at a 10 a.m. news conference held at the offices of the Home Builders Association of Metro Orlando in Maitland.
